When adding images to pages, the best image dimensions depend on a number of factors. Broadly speaking, standard web images should be no more than 1 MB in size and no larger than 1,500px wide. Images intended for print-quality PDFs may exceed these limits.
Image | Recommended Size | Optimal File Size | Application |
---|---|---|---|
President Portrait | 500 px wide, up to 1,000 px tall depending on the aspect ratio | <200 KB | Web, PDF |
Campus Map | Up to 2250 px wide | <1 MB | Web, PDF |
Logo* | 300 px wide | <200 KB | Web |
Splash Page Background | 2250 px wide | <800 KB | Web |
Charts/Graphs | Up to 2250 px wide | <1 MB | Web, PDF |
Accent Images | 1200 px wide | <500 KB | Web, PDF |
Full Page PDF Cover Images | 2550 px wide, 3300 px tall (for full-page letter-size print at 300 DPI) | <10 MB |
*SVG files are preferred for logos, in which case the pixel size is irrelevant.
In order to resize images, you can use an online tool like Image Resizer, Preview on MacOS, or a photo editing software.

Images need to be considered for publication on web and the downloadable PDFs. The image sizes specified above, while wider than necessary for web, will scale down and appear at a high resolution on PDFs.
